Golden Churn importer to keep trying to meet Daud
KUCHING: Hemmat S. Nasrallah, the regional general manager of Ballantyne Foods Pty Ltd which imports Golden Churn butter, says he will make frequent trips to Sarawak until he gets to meet Assistant Minister in the Chief’s Minister’s Department (Islamic Affairs) Datuk Daud Abdul Rahman.
“I flew here today (yesterday) to meet Datuk Daud, but I was told he was away,” said Hemmat here yesterday.
“I will keep coming back until I meet him.”
Hemmat told a press conference that Golden Churn butter was suitable for consumption by Muslims and the company “fully believes in quality control”.
He said that foreign authorities had no problems with the product being sold elsewhere, citing Singapore, Brunei and Australia as examples.
He said he was here to meet local authorities and not for commercial reasons because the matter involved a religious issue.
Earlier at the press conference, Hemmat said he hoped that tinned Golden Churn butter would be back on sale as a halal product by next Hari Raya.
The Golden Churn butter that Ballantyne Foods imports comes in two forms.
One is manufactured and tinned in New Zealand (the one found by Sarawakian authorities to contain porcine DNA) while the other is manufactured in Australia and sold as frozen cubes.
The frozen butter continues to be deemed as halal by state authorities.

"The Ministry of Religious Affairs of Brunei Darussalam would like to inform the public, especially the Muslim community in this country, that the Islamic Religious Council of Brunei Darussalam conducted a meeting on Thursday, August 11 to discuss the status of Golden Churn Pure Creamery Butter," read the statement.
"After evaluating the reports made by the Department of Scientific Services, Ministry of Health (MoH), which analysed 17 samples collected from all four districts, including samples from a neighbouring country, the results of the analysis on all samples have shown that Golden Churn Pure Creamery Butter is free from pig DNA," it added.
Based on this analysis, Brunei Islamic Religious Council has concluded that all Golden Churn Butter products currently distributed in Brunei Darussalam are free from pig DNA and can now be consumed by members of the public including Muslims.
The announcement follows a statement made by the ministry last Saturday, which advised Muslims to avoid using Golden Churn Butter until further information was released following conflicting reports regarding its status.
A previous analysis by the MoH's Department of Scientific Services and subsequent report issued on July 25, said there was no pig DNA detected in the butter product. This and an initial investigation by the Halal Food Control Division of the Department of Syariah Affairs resulted in the product being deemed safe and halal for Muslims in the country.
The Malaysian media then published conflicting reports on the matter, with some confirming the halal status while others claimed that the product contained pig DNA.
The Brunei Ministry of Religious Affairs's announcement yesterday, however, confirms that that Golden Churn Pure Creamery Butter is halal, and can be consumed by Muslims in Brunei.
Speaking to the Bulletin, Mr Tay Wee Lee, Managing Director of Ad East Marketing Sdn Bhd, the main distributor of Golden Churn Butter products in Brunei, expressed his delight at the announcement.
"We are very pleased with the Ministry of Religious Affairs and Ministry of Health's Department of Scientific Services decision," he said. "They did comprehensive tests on Golden Churn Butter, they tested it thoroughly, and their results have shown that it is completely halal for Muslims to consume.
"This has been a household brand for many a generation, and we are very happy that customers can now use Golden Churn with peace of mind, especially with Hari Raya round the corner when Golden Churn will be used a lot," he added.
He admitted that business was affected after last week's reports, but said that while their customers had been holding back on buying the butter, they had remained loyal, and that they had been calling Ad East Marketing to place "huge orders" on the Golden Churn Butter products yesterday in preparation for Hari Raya.
"Our customers can be safe in the knowledge that what they're buying is a product that is safe to consume," he added.
